Bill :

It's been awhile, but as I recall, you _have_ to put the tank in from the
cockpit side, won't fit from the boot.  Trim the filler hose so that it is
only about 2-3" long.  I forget the exact measurement, but it has to be
short enough that the filler neck can touch the tank neck inside the hose.
Then with the tank out of the car, put the hose on the tank neck all the
way, add the two clamps (but leave them loose) and insert the filler neck
until it bottoms.  With the gas tank straps completely off (but the felt
glued into place under the tank), the tank can be rolled into place bottom
first using assorted prybars and cuss words.  The center of the rear deck
can be deflected upwards a little without hurting anything, as long as
you're careful not to crease it.

Install and tighten the straps, then slide the filler neck up until it
touches the bottom of the deck, screw the cap in and get the cap turned to
the proper angle, slide the filler hose up a little if necessary, and
tighten both clamps.
