I am going to guess it won't do it when its cold, but when hot yes. Anyway,
lessening the axial play/thrust in a motor shaft is next to impossible,
shortening the shaft is impractical as the fan won't mount back properly and
you won't gain anything, as the fan is traditionally up against the motor
drive endbell. The options as I see them (not knowing the TR3 fan install).
1) move the fan back from the heater - shim the motor plate and gasket
around the new opening to prevent air leakage. This could be with a bicycle
tire, or suitable piece of thicker rubber probably 1/32 might do it.
2) move the heater in the same fashion away - probably not going to happen.
3) look for a fan wheel with less depth and remount on shaft - downside is
this also means less air movement.
(I broke a hole in my TR6 cardboard tunnel - if that tells you the kind of
advise you are soliciting)

Last night as I laid on my back, half in and half out of the TR3 installing
the heater I thought to myself,, Gee,, I hope I die before I have to do this
again. Well,, didn't happen. got it in and ran fine. Today hooked up the
plumbing,, (heater Hoses) and the HVAC (de-mister tubes),, and ran great for
a while then,, the ticking started. Not that I couldn't have expected it.
I
took the heater core to have it :"boiled" out and the guy decided to
pressure
test it. well without being contained in the heater, the round unit became
an accordian and grew to about twice it's original height. When I went to
pick it up the guy had,, squeezed it back into shape and put 4 straps around
it so he could again ,, pressure test it. Well to make a long story a bit
shorter,, there is not enought room for the fan to "fly" in the housing.
Seems like Mr. Smith cut it close on room and I must have developed more end
play in the motor shaft. Seems excessive at about 1/4" So,, finally my
question to you,, do I just punt and find a new motor,, new heater, or
rebuild the motor and cut down the amount of end play, or,, what? Your
help is ALWAYS appreciated.
