Funny this should come up, because I was just pondering the same issue.
As per the transmission, it would definitely seem to be "the weakest link
... goodbye!" -- but I've seen Terry Hurrell of Triumphtune quoted as saying
"we regularly put 160hp into our GT6 transmission without a problem." I
suppose that the transmission, at best, would have to be in pristine
condition (which mine actually happens to be).
Granted, the 2.5 liter engine won't rev as high as the 2-liter, but in this
instance I think we're talking about race engines vs. street engines.
(Also, my slightly heated-up TR6 engine runs just as smoothly as that of my
GT6.)
To do the conversion, one does have to modify the sump, use the TR6 pistons
(con rods are the same) and crank, and the GT6 flywheel, I believe. The 175
carbs can be used, I think, if the TR6 manifold is mounted upside down. Not
a pretty sight, but I guess it works.
Barry is right -- Kastner says the 150 carbs are good to 7k rpm.
But having the 2.5 liters' low end grunt -- especially in a GT6 with the
3.27 diff -- shor' would be nice for the street and a twisty autox layout.
