This should work if your camshaft is stock. It works for most
aftermarket cams, but not all (especially more 'modern' grinds) :
Turn the engine until #1 is at TDC and firing (timing mark at TDC, rotor
pointing to #1). Set the valve clearances on #1 to .040". Now turn the
crank forward one full turn, coming up to exactly TDC without rocking
backwards. (If you go past, you'll have to go another 2 full turns.)
You want the engine at TDC again, with #6 firing. This should place #1
at what the books call "the point of balance", with the intake valve
closing and the exhaust valve opening. Measure the valve clearances on
#1, they should be equal. .005" one way or the other is no big deal,
but they should be close.
If you want to measure the exact valve timing, you'll have to jockey the
engine to the point where the gaps are equal, but get there by turning
the engine forward. Even with the tensioner, there is some backlash in
the timing chain, so if you turn the engine backwards, you will not get
an accurate picture. The valve timing can only be adjusted in
increments of 4 degrees, so as long as you're within that margin,
everything is fine. One tooth is roughly 16 degrees.
Don't forget to set the clearances back when you're done playing <g>
