The plugs are no longer listed by any of the major vendors. I haven't been
able
to find a proper threaded fastener to re-plug the holes, but maybe there is
one
available somewhere. The problem is that all the socket head plugs I've
been able
to find are coarse thread, pipe threads.

If these are, indeed, 5/8 UNF (and not BSF or some other standard)  you can
buy 5/8-18 socket set screws from McMaster-Carr.  They have them in 5/8
length (page 2801, part number 91375A810 - available in less than full
package quantities).  (630) 833 0300.  NFI
