Graham:

Could you have broken a ring? The tensioner on the timing chain? You could
also have had a part from the clutch disc or throuw-out bearing separate.
Any loose piece banging about the engine can make quite a grinding rattling
noise. You should drop the oil pan and check for debris. I once found a
whole rod and piston in mine!

Hi Folks
A Couple of weeks ago I was leaving a junction in my 2.5PI, changed into
second gear and accelerated some more and suddenly GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Off the power, check the "your engine has just expired light" other wise
known as the oil pressure light, no that is not on, check the other gauges,
all is normal, but I know from the noise that the engine is dead! I gently
limped to a place to listen more and yep that noise is the main bearings.
Gingerly I bring it home park up walk away semi disgusted and semi amazed I
am home at all. Next day I get a surprise visit from my old Motor Vehicle
Technology Teacher, Ex Royal Engineer. I let him listen to the noise, and he
confirmed my diagnosis. The bloke over the road who is no idiot when it
comes to engines also has a listen and reconfirms my diagnosis. ( I have had
several old Triumphs with bearings that have rattled the death knoll but not
as loud or as suddenly as these!)
I stripped the engine bay ready to start the engine lift, I have a
replacement engine to hand to drop in whilst I rebuild an engine for her,
started her up to drive her the fifty yards to my garage for the lift job
and well whadaya know, no noise, blipped the throttle, still no noise, rung
the nuts, still no noise! Now I know mains and ends do not self heal right?
I should say that before I stripped the engine bay I did a full diagnostic
on the engine, oil pressure, compression pressures and a leak down test.
Oil pressure was hot values when cold and slightly lower when hot.
Compression was low on 2&5, this showed as valves on the leak down test.
I am still going to remove and rebuild etc but I am curious, I still haven't
had the chance to pull the motor, any one got any ideas!
