>My car USED to crank without a problem but won't start. I changed the
points, rotor and condensor and still nothing. To make a long story
short...I tried again today to try and get her started and while cranking
the engine a big spark came from the starter. From then on, when I turn the
key, the engine doesn't crank anymore. All electrical works except for
that.
Can someone guide me into what may be the problem?

Patrick, it is likely that the two problems are unrelated but if you have a
6 volt coil with the ballast resistor then there is a scenario where the
two problems may have a common cause. That would be the starter solenoid.
The six volt coil uses a ballast resistor to bring the total resistance to
an equivelent of the 12 volt coil. However, during cranking a terminal on
the solenoid connects the ballast resistor bypass wire to a 12 volt source.
If this wire were connected to chassis instead (say through bad or missing
insulation or a solenoid that was self destructing) then it would shunt the
current from the ballast resistor away from the coil rendering the ignition
system inactive.

Before replacing the starter, check the wiring to the solenoid for chaffed
insulation and/or exposed wires. Or melted insulation. Over the years the
heat in the vicinity of the starter will take its toll on the plastic
insulation.

Good luck
