Hi David,
Make a trip to your local home center, buy a length of stout chain (one size
up from bicycle lock type will do) some bolts or shackles to attach it, and
a 2" ratcheting tie down strap. Do not try to use the 1" straps as they are
not rated for this type of use.
Put the car on the trailer (some 8' long 2X10's may help) and set the brake
or chock the wheels, attach the chain around the rear axle and secure it to
the trailer. Attach the tie down strap around the front cross member (no not
the piece that holds the radiator the next one back). Release the parking
brake and ratchet the strap tight. Attach another length of chain around the
crossmember or lower "A" arm and secure to the trailer (this is just for
safety). Additional straps and chains can be used if you want an extra
margin of saftey but these three points (chain at rear axle, strap on front
cross member and chain up front for saftey) will keep the car on the trailer
as far as you want to tow it.
VERY IMPORTANT:
After you have driven 1 or 2 miles stop and check/tighten the tie down
straps. Check them every time you stop as well if you're making a long
journey.
Remember, it is your responsibility to make sure everything on your trailer
(brakes, lights, saftey equipment, etc.) is working and secure.
Cheers,
John Matthews
