Bill,

I think you're probably correct.  I looked over my new sender unit and can 
visualize the clank if the sender arm (from the top of the unit to the 
plastic float) were to become loose.....does it clank when the tank is topped 
off or only when your less than half full?  

I'd delay the repair until after VTR - use the trip odometer as you 
mentioned....the worst that can happen (leaving things as they are) is the 
arm would fall off and either float upside down in the tank or sink under 
it's own weight - the fuel gage would be pegged permanently at some reading 
which wouldn't matter since the gauge isn't working correctly anyway! 

You just never know what other gremlins will surface when you finally start 
the repair.....so why chance-it for the big event!
