You match the rev's of the engine to what the new gear "wants" it to be
while the gearbox is passing through neutral. Inotherwords, you treat it as
if you were double-clutching, except that you don't have a clutch.
When upshifting you wait until the engine rpm's have dropped down to what
the new gear wants (and you try to feather the throttle there) before you
shift; when downshifting you rev the engine to the appropriate speed before
shifting. Of course, it helps if you know the car really well. Also if you
have a tach.
You don't want to force the gear in until the rpm's are about right. The
synchro's normally prevent the gear from dropping in until it is about at
the right speed, and if your synchro's are good you can't force it in
anyway. Perhaps this is a case where you'd be better off if the gearbox is
a bit tired!
