It should not hurt the engine. Though it is indicating one or more of
several things: sear in the pump, wear in the bearings, oil pressure
regulator worn or improperly adjusted.
Try adjusting the oil pressure regulator to see if you can boost the
pressure a bit. The instructions are in the workshop manual.
>Q#2 what does "the" vaccuume line that runs from the
>carbs to the distributor do???
Your distributor has two advances, a mechanical (activated by centrifugal
force acting on weights and springs) and a vacume advance. The hose
connects the vacume advance unit to an opening behind the butterfly of a
carb.
Your engine creates a vacume and a hose to the distributor sucks the air
from one side of a diaphragm moving the plate the points sit on. A crack
in the hose or a plug can defeat the vacume advance. A crack in the
diaphragm can as well.
A Mity - Vac is useful for testing this circuit.
