check strap

Hay list,
    Today the check strap on my car door separated and needs to be replaced.
Has anyone had to do this?  Did you use rivets in the replacement? Seems hard
to imagine how you would peen them over.  If not what did you replace the
rivets with?
    As always I appreciate your help.
