The O/D sometimes works and sometimes does not when the switch on the
steering
column is engaged. It also has a tendency to come out of O/D at random.

to work fine in the interim. Whats the opinion of the list as to the source
of
the problem?

I would figure, based on your question, that the switch has gone bad, or you
have a short in the wiring. Test the wires, then check the connections. If
these are fine, your switch is probably bad.
