That is just not normal.  Based on my OD rebuilding work... I
would agree with the assessment that has been offered by others
that it is related to the end play of the two big bearings in the
rear casing.  It is real hard to get this right.  When the parts
heat up there needs to be enough room for the bearing without
creating any side loads.

I doubt if it is slipping of the clutch.  You can feel it when
the OD is slipping... and the filter screen would be full of
clutch material

It could also be a plain failing bearing.  Is the A-Type newly
rebuilt or is it "as is" from another car??
