Worn splines?

Question for the list: I have been noticing a "squeak" from my left rear
wheel every time I let off or apply power...I suspected worn splines and
confirmed when I removed the wire wheel . When pressed 2/3 of the way on it
does not move, but when fully seated I can rotate the wheel 1/8 - 1/4 inch.
I cranked on the knockoff, but that only held tight for a couple of miles ,
then the squeak returned. My question.....Is it more likely the hub splines
which are worn or would it be more likely to be the wire wheel itself? Are
new hubs obtainable from the big3? The wire wheel is in good shape otherwise
and I don't really want to buy another one (new ones already on the front).
Is there another fix ? Thanks for your patience!
