Randall,
Actually, fluids can expand as they are compressed.  Here's how it works:

1. Compression causes heat.
2. Heat normally expands.

Of course, different fluids are affected differently by compression and 
Hydraulic fluids are typically selected because of their properties to resist
compression and expansion.
