Mike-
You can use a power mounting machine, just not the usual older style one.
Take your rims to a shop or tire store equipped with a "mag" rim
machine(also known as a rim clamp type.) This type has the rim placed onto a
flat rotating table, after a floor mounted clamp presses the tire back from
the bead. Once on the table, four clamps or dogs slide out, and grip the
inside of the rim from below. The tire guy then swings down a long arm, and
pulls the mounting/dismounting jig into position, then uses a tire iron to
pop the tire over the jig pawl. Once ready, the table is turned, and it very
nicely and cleanly removes the one side from the rim. Then the same action
is performed a second time, pulling the lower side onto the jig pawl, and
the tire is now absolved of further contact with said rim, which is now
sitting naked on the rotating table. Assembly is the reverse of removal, and
thus nice, clean with no damage to the spokes, splines, or other incidentia
of a wire wheel.
Should the tire guy you speak to tell you that the machine can only be used
on aluminum or magnesium(mag) rims, tell him he is an idiot, and find
another, as you don't want idiots doing your tires. I used to work as a tire
changer, and those machines are damn handy for all but the smallest or
largest rims.(for Mini's or trucks, respectively.) (Say, do they make wire
wheels for Austin/Cooper Minis? Probably have about 3 spokes...)
Good luck with them,
Scott
PS Anybody want to buy a set of 5 wire rims for an MGB? Offers listened
to...
