So I thought I'd do a quick repair this evening and change the lock cylinder on
the trunk of the TR-6.
Yeah It's all covered in crud, and a couple layers of paint. . . I see the red
top coat, the metalic blue under it, I don't see the original white. .. must
not have been painted to start with.
Anyway. . .I'm backing out the screws that hold the latch on, and they start
getting really really hard to turn.
I bear down with one hand and turn with the other (surely there can't be much
thread left)
WHOLLY CRAP that was hard. Despite my best efforts (and blisters) the philips
heads deform.
It turns out because they are nice soft BRASS screws. I guess Triumph didn't
want them to rust.
After using tiny vice grips on the heads and 1/64 of a turn increments, and a
LOT of time, I finally have the stupid mechanism off.
My reward: It looks like there are rivets holding the lock mechanism mounting
plate to the latch mechanism.
It is also held on by screws. . . but you can't reach them unless you drill out
the rivets first. (correct me if I'm wrong)
It's been one of those days, and I had to vent.
Why didn't any of you tell me what a pain in the ass this'd be? I'd have set
the proper expectations.
By the way, the Glove box lock from Moss wasn't black (as it was labeled) nor
did it fit anyway.
I was wondering what the third strike for the evening was going to be.. . I
just got my answer.
I burnt the heck out of my leftovers I was reheating for dinner.
I guess that's better than someone stealing stuff out of my trunk tonight.
That's it.. . .three strikes and I'm out. I'll try again tomorrow.
