Um, when you're replacing your whittled fan belt, see if you hear the sound
with the belt off. You can rule out the generator. Then: valves? With only one
year of TR4 driving, I still don't know the 'normal' sounds from the 'bad' ones.
I guess you could call CarTalk and do the sound for them on the air. ;-)

Estimate of what? I have USAA 'regular' insurance, no use limits. They
set the rate based on my history (perfect, married, over 30, one ticket 10
years ago, strikingly handsome) and I suppose they guess how much the
car might be worth. It's $10K or so I think, so there's probably not much
risk for them. My company doesn't ask for a valuation when I insure it,
though. When my '72 BMW was totalled, we worked the value out using
old car guides after the fact, and I was happy with the result.

I'm guessing your company wants an estimate of current market value,
something like that? I'd photocopy* the TR4 page from the NADA
collector guide, and from the CPI guide. Decide what condition your
car is in (according to the guide's rules) and take some photos and
provide the mechanic's inspection to prove it. You might also gather
all the want ads you've seen, the stuff on vtr.org classifieds, and any
TR4's for sale on the web. Do you have a copy of the TR4 buyers
guide from the magazine I mentioned when you were hunting? Write
down those values, do a currency conversion, and give them that too.
Tell them that based on all this, you think your car is worth $xxxx
and you think they should set their rate accordingly. Doesn't mean
you'll get it if the car ends up in the Hudson, but if they are charging
you rates based on a $8K car, in my non-lawyer mind they've kind
of agreed your car's worth $8K** -- and at least Triumphs don't
depreciate.

*of course, I'd only do this if it was clearly fair use. If it's not clear,
well then just note the values and cite your source I guess.

**I know this isn't what happens in the real world, so you don't have
to write me a note telling me otherwise. OTOH my only old car
insurance claim worked out well, so I'm clearly an expert here. ;-)
Still, no express or implied warranties, YMMV.
