I agree too. My understanding is the right the copy (i.e. copyright)
belongs to the author as soon as the piece is written. Putting a
copyright statement in the publication simply means the piece has
been registered with the proper governmental agency and thus makes it
easier to prove ownership and sue somebody's butt for infringement.
