1) I believe some of these rubber items (like the rubber steering column
joints) are important for reducing wear on 'metal to metal' items - like the
almost imposible to find rack and pinion - pinion gear - and the teeth on the
rack as well.
2) My rubber joints were all seperated from the integral metal parts for
about 10 years before I changed them - didn't seem to affect steering or
safety much - I just got tired of seeing them delaminated.
Of course now with the ground up restoration everything will be held to a
higher standard!

I have seen several racers convert to the solid TR6 u-joints. Much safer I
