I think you have run into what is called "Market Pricing". Basically,
the vendor has concluded that American buyers are typically prepared to
pay more than British ones. If you can get more for your goods from
one market than another, then you price them to maximise your profits
accordingly. (I won't go into how to calculate a market price
maximised for profits unless you really want me to!)
The fact that his various price structures are up on the Internet for
all to see makes this potentially embarrassing, and, indeed, you have
managed to embarrass him. Probably not enough to make him recalculate
his prices, though.
