That was me, who started the thread you're remembering.
Finding the leak is easy, if indeed it is leaking. (!)  Just heat
a pot of water almost to boiling, and dunk the float under. 
Heated air expands, and a stream of bubbles will flow out the
pinhole.  That said, there may not be a leak.  My float was 1/4
full of gas and did not leak.  I believe the gas got in there by
diffusing through the plastic as a vapor in the summer, and
condensing in the winter.  After 28 years of that, a few
thimblesfull had accumulated.
So, I didn't have a chance to try any of the repairs suggested by
listers.  The best-sounding advice was to melt a bit of scrap
from a plastic bottle over the leak, with a soldering iron. 
Supposedly, the best plastic to use would be from a discarded
bottle of windshield washer fluid.
Me, I just bought a new float.  Your local Jaguar dealer will
have a pop-on replacement.
