Rick :
That's actually a pretty common leak, the sealing rings get old and hard,
and there's a surprising amount of oil thrown up there by the gears.
Replacing the rings is something of a chore, you have to disassemble the
entire top cover, including the interlocks and detents, and cutting and
replacing the safety wire that retains the three taper pins (six on TR2-3).
Getting the interlocks back into place properly is kind of tricky, too. (I
was just helping a friend last Sunday, whose top cover was apparently
damaged by having one of the interlock balls left out. Hey Dennis : Have
you tried it yet ? Did the double seals work ?)
Another problem is that I've seen several sets of new seals that don't fit!
Our local TR machinist (Herman van den Akker) makes up packing rings from
brass to fill in the slot.
I managed to find some funny shaped seals at the local plumbing shop, with
an oval cross-section, that seem to fit, but I haven't tried them yet.
Don't know if they'll stand up to gear oil.
