Well, I finally fixed the broken horn on the TR7, although not quite the way
I wanted to do it. Like lots of LBCs, you push down on the turn signal stalk
to blow the horn, and I've heard rumors of the wires inside getting frayed.
So naturally I thought I would disassemble the signal unit and see it that
was the problem.
I'm usually pretty careful about opening up this kind of stuff, but despite
my best intentions, when I pried open the top, all sorts of springs, ball
bearings, and electrical contacts fell out. That's ok, I've had that happen
before, but when I tried to put them all back in, there weren't enough
pieces... My next move was completely out of character for me. Instead of
spending hours trying to put it all back together, I just put all the parts
in a baggie, and ordered a new switch. I finished installing it today, and
guess what, the horn works. I'm poorer, but in a lot better frame of mind....
Second item is that despite my best intentions, the mechanical fuel pump
continues to leak. It seems to be coming from the middle of the pump, where
the two pieces of the pump are pressed on together, so I don't think it can
be fixed. I've also noticed that the previous owner used two spacers,
instead of one, when mounting the pump to the engine. Very curious.
Amazingly, my local parts dealer says he can order one of these pumps for
about $37.
So the two questions for today are as follows:
Any reason not to buy a pump from a local parts store? I don't know if I
would know a good pump from a bad one, so other than warranty, is there
anything to look for?
And any idea why my current pump would have two spacers instead of one?
Maybe the wrong pump was used and the spacers correct the problem?
As always, thanks.
