You are both correct. The VB unit is the one that was sold mostly here in
the states. I like the look of the rack on the trunk, and leave it on full
time. It also gives you a nice grab bar to open the boot, especially when
your hands are full. Taking things on and off, particularly when they
require adjusting turnbuckles and padding, adds an opportunity to collect
dings and scratches. I also never know when I'm going to need the
additional room. That little treasure in the wine country didn't occur to
me in the garage before I left. Stainless also requires very little upkeep
as well, especially when the car is garaged.

I have the factory style on my TR3A. When I'm not using it, it is stored in
a dry place with a little desicant so that it will stay nice looking. I
have added a little padding inside the clamp that fits to the bottom
edge of the boot lid. THis is to keep the clamp from chipping paint. So
basically it is on the car only when I'm traveling and wanting extra
storage.
