Susan, by now you must have the answer, but I'd bet that you have a broken 
throwout bearing fork pin.
The cross shaft moves, but the fork slips on the shaft resulting in less 
throwout bearing motion.  With
thick, cold oil in the transmission, it is OK, but as it thins out, it allows 
too much rotation.

IMHO, there should be no clatter as reverse is selected, not "the usual".
