The external ballast resistor seems the perfect way to go to me. Unless
original appearance is important to you, I wouldn't bother with incorporating
the wire in the harness. Just buy the appropriate resistor and mount it
someplace convenient.
However, I doubt you'll have starting problems using the 12v coil, unless you
live in a pretty severe climate.
