Judging from my '70 Mk3 and the earlier 1147cc Spit 4 I owned, I would say
that 28 to 35 mpg - combined highway & short trips - reasonable driving style
(redline every other shift!) - is a good range for an unrestored but well
maintained engine.
So that covers roughly 1962 to 1971.....I can't comment on the 1500 cc Spits
- especially those afflicted with the curse of US federal emissions equipment.
