Umm just remember that each crank has it's own harmonic characteristics
and each harmonic dampener is designed for specific crank harmonic
characteristics. You want the a dampener that came off a crank with
almost identical harmonic characteristics.
A bad mismatch might even increase harmonic vibrations at a certain RPM.
I was told that the people who chose the harmonic dampener used in the
kit that Racestorations and British Frame and Engine sells had access to
all the crank harmonic test data that British Lealand had (which included
pre Lealand specs). They compaired the TR four's harmonic data with all
the rest until they found a match.
I believe the match was found in a pre-MGB, MG engine but I do not know
which.
Now as to the $400ish price. you are paying for a low production alloy
water pump pully, a crank harmonic dampener/pully, a crank seal, a fan
belt and the research & engineering of everything. Do you kow what front
crank seal will work with the diameter of the dampener you have chossen?
Ever wonder why they went to a custom alloy water pump pulley and not a
narrow belt pulley off a different car? I suspect it is because they
could not find one with the right offset to line up with their harmonic
dampener pulley. Those two pulleys are close and do need to be in
alignment unless you fancy replacing belts very frequently.
I wish you luck in your wrecking yard scavanged harmonic dampener kit.
