If the pistons take more than a gentle tap with a hammer handle to come out, 
it's a safe bet that they are ruined and will need to be replaced anyway. 
 However, they're pretty tough, and my experience is that they won't break even 
after using a BFH and length of (trimmed) 2x4.  But, I'd never reuse one that 
has been so treated.  I've even had to resort to a length of 1" pipe to drive 
out really stubborn ones.
