Knocked as in pinged like detonation for poor spark or carbon deposits, or 
cheap fuel?  Or knocked as in rod bearings loose and about to send flying 
rods through the block?

Big difference.  I'd try to convince him it was rods and offer $3000.00 then 
buy new fuel and do a tune up.

How is the end float?
