Here's a test given to me by the local LBC repair house. They take the
units off and connect them the the brake servo vacuum line from another
car. Start up the test vehicle and work the actuator rod. If the test
car starts to idle erratically, then there's an indication that
something leaks inside and it's time to pitch it.
If you've ever had a leaky MC, the fluif can play hell with the MC end
seal and the servo internals. I think that about all you can replace
with simple hand tools, are the external seals. If it doesn't seem to
leak, however, there's a servo kit available that includes a new seal at
the MC interface, filter and bellows for the pedal end and some other
odd bits. I bought the kit as my servo didn't leak but the MC had, and
I didn't have any problems. A $22 kit and a little black paint is
cheaper than sending it out.
