Tom,
If you do have a J-type as Randall suspects (and I do too, being a '76
TR-6), I've seen this same problem twice before. In both cases the car
would be fine in forward gears, but exhibit partial slip in reverse. The
problem turned out to be the large circlip that retains the bearing on
the clutch carrier. This had popped out of it's groove and had allowed
the bearing to walk slightly thus having the effect of moving the clutch
ring further forward (away from the annulus) in relation to the carrier.
As a result, there was inadequate spring pressure to keep the clutch from
slipping the annulus - magnified by the tallest ratio being reverse. See
if your problem is magnified by reversing up an incline where there would
be more load on it, if you find the slipping to be worse in that case I'm
afraid it might be time to pull the 'box and open up the OD.
