Sorry. I am a Saint Paul kid. I got over to the mill city once in a while
for jazz at the Cafe Extraordinaire, a coffee house across from Magoo's. I
was usually the only white guy in the place, unless you counted Julius
Goldstein, the piano and sax guy. He was versatile. A rock band playing
Magoo's hired him to play drums for their gig. Since he was at least
middle-age, that must have been a sight. I didn't see it, I was across the
street getting the story from Doris, the co-owner of the Cafe. They went
bust after a debacle in which they bought out Magoo's, moved across the
street and supposedly booked Buddy Miles. There was a riot when the crowd,
missing the jewels in his teeth (probably the genesis of Dr. Teeth and the
Electric Mayhem), deduced the guy was an impostor. This was the first time
in my tender young life that I had ever heard the term "ripped off".
Actually, my girlfriend, who went to the U of M, took me to The Scholor or a
similar West Bank place once, but I still can't remember why.
