Smoking TR6

This is probably a really simple question betraying my basic lack of
expertise, but hey - you have to start somewhere. I am told by the
firend who was trying to keep up with me in his hire car last night that
I get a puff of smoke between first and second gear. What are the
possible causes? It tends to happen only when I am accelerating fairly
hard.
