Thanks to all who responded to my question regarding installation of grommets and plugs. It seems that the use of a lubricant such as WD40 or silicone is the way to go. Also, if you can reach both sides of the hole, use a string wrapped around the grommet or plug recess to pull the lip through the other side of the hole.
