Advice needed:
For the past couple of weeks, I have noticed a small amount of grease
appearing on the outside of my passenger-side front wheel. I think it's
time to replace the wheel seals. At the same time I will repack the front
bearings. I have never done it to this car, although I have done it to my
MGB.
Questions:
According to the drawings in my Bentley manual and in Kenneth Ball's book,
the seal is on the inside of the wheel behind the inside bearing. Is it
possible for grease to migrate to the outside of the wheel (where I've seen
it) if this was defective, or only on the inside? If not the seal, what
else could it be?
A couple of different Churchill tools are mentioned to remove the hub from
the axle. Can I do it without one? What is the likelihood of damaging a
bearing while pulling off the hub?
Finally, what type of grease is recommended? I have all purpose lithium
grease in my grease gun. Is this OK?
Any other good advice from the "been there done that" folks? Thanks!
