Bryce,
        To determine if the timing mark is off, remove the plugs, turn the
engine over (I put it 4th gear and push) until the # 1 piston is coming
up on the compression stroke and then place a long thin screwdriver or
similar tool into the # 1 spark plug hole and carefully turn the engine
to determine when the piston has reached top dead center and check your
timing mark. It should be at "0" or within a degree or so. Also check
your distributor without moving the engine and make sure the rotor is
pointing toward the # 1 lead position. If not, something is amiss.
