Ted,
I just re-read your note and realized I answered the wrong question.
There is supposed to be a bushing installed on both sides of the bellhousing
case. There were 2 designs used. The TR3-TR4 gearboxs used a approx 1" wide
bushing and also used a shaft that was drilled to accept a grease fitting on
both ends. The grease was feed to thr bushings. With the TR4A and beyond...
they switched to no grease fittings and smaller 1/2" bushings. Many times when
you remove the shaft on an old transmission the bushings have worn a deep
groove in the soft shaft. This causes lots of "play" in the clutch linkage and
you don't get a full throw.
I switched to the wide bearing and used a shaft from a spare gearbox that had
the grease fittings for longer life and less wear. TRF sell a new shaft with
the grease fittings for about $30 if you need it.
