FT,
Could well be however, parts and accessories were many times difficult to get
so we sourced them locally, For instance the Volvo pv444's we worked on (as
well as Tr's) used Studebaker brakes, clutches, Bosch ignitions, SU carbs,
etc., etc. The mark of a good parts man was that he knew what cross
referenced what.
Manhattan handled BMC stuff. Jack Pry is the fellow you forgot. Early on he
handled a little of everything. I have a very clear memory of seeing a brand
new J2 Allard in his showroom on Wisconsin Ave in Bethesda Md., blood red w/
whitewall tires WOW!
Later his drivers tore up two of the only four 300 SL coupes in the US. This
was at Cumberland Md. and one of the Merc's hit Jack's parked Rolls.
I worked for a fellow named Bob Murray who owned Annapolis Motors, originally
at 6th& NY Ave. NW DC. We later moved to Kensington Md. The only other
Triumph dealer was
United Auto in Wheaton Md. For a while there was a Continental Motors. They
handled Elva
and other exotics. I was involved in preparing and crewing some race cars for
them until the owner went to jail. The driver was a Charlie Kolb. Later
there were several other dealerships in the area but by then (mid 60's) I was
in the insurance business.
Were you in the DC area at this time?
Regards,
Doug Ross,
Rosebud Racecar
