How high of a pressure rating on a radiator cap can I use (specifically on a '71
GT-6)? The Bentley's manual refers to a 7 psi press test (10 sec duration!). I
have been using a 13 psi cap for the past 4 years. I am interested in upping to
a 15 or 16 psi cap. I realize that this puts greater stress on the cooling
system. THe rad was recored 4 years ago, the heater core is from a '78 Spit.
Any of you running higher press (15 or 16 psi) radiator caps on: TR-6, GT-6 or
Spits?
I am interested in upping the cap because I get an occasional radiator burp that
fills / overflows the expansion tank. THe burp occurs when the water temp is
slightly below half displacement on the gage and I have been stuck in traffic.
This past winter I replaced the thermostat with a Robershaw 330-160 high flow
unit. My thinking is that the flow, when the thermostat opens (and if the
engine revs up simultaneously), is too much and the extra volume is displaced
into the overflow tank. I am hesitant to go back to a standard flow thermostat
because I like how the water temp drops much faster once the car is moving at
speeds above 25 mph. I spend about 30 min of my 13.5 mile, 45 min commute
either stopped or creeping along.
