Fred :

The Haynes manual lists fuel pressure as 1.25 to 2.5 psi. IMO you
should be able to go as high as 4 psi without problems. Your fuel line
sizes sound fine (original was 5/16" to the pump inlet, 1/4" from the
pump to the carbs).

If you continue to have problems, get a vacuum test gauge at your local
auto supplier (be sure it also reads positive pressure to at least 4
psi), and temporarily tee it in right at the carbs (or even between the
carbs). The hose supplied with the gauge should be long enough that you
can lead it out under the hood, and place it under the RHS windscreen
wiper, so that you can observe it while driving. You may find that, for
whatever reason, your pump/regulator cannot keep up under load.

JC Whitney sells an 'economy' vacuum test gauge for $12.99.
