List,
OK so ten minutes ago I'm cruising in the 6 and brake real heavy for a
yellow light (shoulda run it I guess). Feel a blip on the brake pedal
midway in the stop and immediately lose braking power to the point where
I have a momentary fear that I'm not gonna get stopped before I roll
into the intersection. I do stop in time and with no where to turn off
the busy street to investigate. I try the pedal while stopped but now
there's a hard feel when I push it not that little squish you usually
feel. When I eventually can pull off the road there's definitely less
braking power. Nothing visible going on under the bonnet, no brake
fluid leaking or anything else amiss. Since I do have some braking
power I carefully drive home. Once I'm away from the road noise and in
the neighborhood I hear a sucking sound when I press the brake pedal and
the engine idle drops and runs crappy.
So vacuum leak symptoms and bad braking equals a problem in the brake
booster right? So IF that's the problem how do I confirm it and more
importantly how do I fix it? I have a diagram of it in the spare parts
catalog and I'm thinking it's the diaphragm (sic) or seal that's given
it up. Anyone know where I can buy parts for a brake booster. Or
should I send it out to be repaired by someone that know what they're
doing? I remember someone on the list mentioning that someone rebuilds
brake boosters...any one know who that is offhand?
Could it be something else in the booster since it was a sudden change
under hard braking pressure?
I do have a spare booster, albeit a rusted hunk, that I could use
temporaily if I have to send the broken one out....or I could put it up
on jack stands and do the bushings, shocks, and diff mounts that I've
been putting off.
Thanks in Advance
Bud
