Brian,

You may want to swap out your TR-4 gearchange lever for one from a
'4A or '6 as they are shorter than the TR-4 unit and will give you a
little more clearance between the steering wheel and the gearshift
in first. If you want a still shorter lever, do what I do in my '64
and run a TR-3 straight gear lever in the car. This gives a very
quick gear change with a nice position in the car, but does require
you to run without the center console/dash support bracket (which I
do anyway because I need the legroom).

Note that if you swap to the TR-6 lever in an earlier car you will
also need the locating pins from a TR-6 as they don't have the slot
for the through bolt like the early ones do.

Good luck!
