Paul,

Based on a discussion on the list... I didn't use any sealant
between the glass and the rubber gasket. I never drive in the
rain on purpose... but ended up driving back from an autocross at
highway speeds in a rainstorm a couple of weeks ago and noticed a
"trickle" of water at the lower edges of the rubber gasket when I
got home.

I plan to go back and seal the gasket with the stuff I originally
bought for the sealing jobs on the TR. It's called "DURO Black
Rubber Sealant". It come in a tube from my ACE hardware store.
I will use a round rod or something to open a gap between the
glass and the rubber and squeeze in a little seal and the wipe
the whole off with solvent.

One of the reasons I decided not to use sealant... other than the
"no rain driving" policy was that the job of putting the glass
into the frame with a new rubber gasket is a challenge that takes
some doing.... like wrestling with a pack of gorillas. The idea
of having black goo on everything at the same time seemed beyond
control.

Do you know about the string trick for installing the glass? If
not I can look in my "sent items" folder for the instructions.

Subject: Windshield Frame Seal

List,

I need some suggestions based on experiences with installing the
windshield
frame on a TR4. I've got a new rubber seal and according to both
the TR4
workshop manual and a Haynes manual, I need to use something
called
sealastick. What exactly is this? Sounds like something that
comes in a
strip, but I can't be sure. Are there any readily available
alternatives?
Also, when replacing the glass (with a new seal), do I need to
use some type
of sealant? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul Brandsema
