David,
Try finding a thinner board and place it on the rear oil pan bolts.  That way 
you jack against something solid.  Also be sure as you
jack that there is nothing restricting the path of the tranny.  (THings like 
rear mounts, the drive shaft, etc.)

Also watch the front of the engine to be sure the fan is not pushed into the 
radiator as it goes up.
