Mike-
( I'm assuming you have a mechanical pump-if not,please delete now)

I had this same symptom last summer. I was convinced it was vapor lock
or something like that. I went through my entire ignition and fuel
system replacing one item at a time until I got to the fuel pump.
Changed the pump and it went away, permanently. Usually the symptoms
followed after idling in traffic, in line for placement in a car show,
etc so I theorize that somehow the weak pump was not pushing enough
fuel and allowed easy conditions for the fuel to boil at some point,
causing the vapor lock. I guess as soon as I would begin to drive away,
the fuel in the bowl would be used up, and then it couldn't get much
more fuel past the bubble. The way I found it was to put a clear plastic
fuel filter on immediately following the metal fuel line leading from
the pump around the front of the engine. Next few times it happened I
jumped out of my car ( well, after pulling over) and looked at the
filter, and lo and behold, it was bone dry.

Now that may seem unrelated, but if you have access to a spare fuel pump
or can come up with an extra 35 bucks for a replacement it might be
worth a try-besides, its one of those spares you should carry in the
boot anyways.
