Michael,
I just looked at my OD unit down in the basement and all my parts
books and found that in fact it was both ways. My OD unit has a
rubber button with a round extension on the bottom that fits into
the hole in the casting. the button part is about 3/16 thick.
There is no adjustment possible on the rubber part. Mine is all
old and mushy from underframe oil spray over the years.
However, my TR4A parts catalog shows a adjusting screw (PN
513918) and locknut (513919) set up for OD of that timeframe. I
can FAX the pages if you want to see the drawings. None of the
parts guys carry the parts.
You can go either way and fabricate from hardware store stuff or
maybe some of the other guys have a solution.

Just looked in my Haynes manual again and it looks like this stop
(pls see
previous post) is in fact supposed to be some sort of rubber
plug, not a set
screw. So the rubber residue I found is the result of a worn out
plug, not
some bodged repair by the PO.
However, I can't find the part in any of my catalogs. Have any of
you been
successful with an alternative, homemade part? Or is there a
standard
hardware store item that will work?...I'm my own DPO :^) If not,
anyone know
where I can find the real thing?
Thanks again, folks..I WILL get this thing on the road before the
summer's
over!
