Tony-
Changing front springs without proper compressor is about the most
dangerous thing you can do in these cars ( besides "spirited" driving
and working under the car using a scissor jack ). A good spring
compressor is a must. The jack-and-compress method has the possibility
of a slip and that spring will come at you at a zillion miles per hour
and take your head off. Besides, the spring compressor allows you to
move things around a little bit during reinstallation, which can't be
done with the jack compression method.
Moss makes a very solid compressor designed for TR front suspensions
for about $35 ( less if you get it from The British Parts Connection (
thebpc.com). I used it, its secure, solid and does the job. If you are
like me, you will likely mess something up at least once and need to go
back an pull the springs a couple of times, so it's a worthwhile
investment and you will have something to loan other local club members
in need.
